WELCOME ALL ERIE RAILROAD BUFFS
My name is Jim Duell and I am a 54 year old train buff. I use to live in Hornell when it was a big railroad city. The mainline goes through the city from all points east & west. About ten times a year I would go down and check out the progress being made on the restoration project at the Hornell Depot. They have done a super job !! Taking the grand tour of the finished depot on June 25 & 26 2003 the inside looks as super as the outside does. I have taken many, many pictures of the depot through out its restoration process from start to finish. I didn't get on the inside as much as I wanted to due to all the work being done when I wasn't around. To see it finished was magnificant and worth everything put into putting it back together. I just purchased a new Konica Minolta 7D Digital SLR Camera and the first set of pictures on this was at the depot. I drove 45 miles just to get these 50 pictures. Also, took a lot around the city of different buildings and all the new businesses being built.

HORNELL DEPOT GETTING A MAJOR FACELIFT
For almost a year now workers have started working on the Erie Railroad Depot on Loader Street in Hornell, NY. It really is starting to take shape now with all new windows and new doors along with air conditioning units all installed along the back side. The outside bricks has been freshly painted with green windows in the upstairs instead of the light blue as they have been for years. Its going to be beautiful when it is finished by October. I can't wait to see the final project finished. I will be one of the first in line for the big tour & ride.

THE SILVER LAKE RAILROAD
Back in 1956 our family of 5 moved from Hornell to Silver Lake, NY. My dad was working in Rochester on Construction and it was about 1 hour from Silver Lake to his job. Just down the street on the lakes edge was the track that carried the Silver Lake Railway from Silver Springs to Perry with coal, lumber, tires, and much more. These items were picked up and taken back to Silver Springs and was picked up by the train traveling the main line as it passed through Silver Springs. The Silver Lake Junction was pretty busy from the early 20's to 1972 when is closed down. The tracks were pulled up and that was the end of the Silver Lake Railroad. Now in the 2000's it probably could be still used for the local businesses to haul lumber, tires, chemicals, and other products to the Perry area.

The finished depot project sure looks mighty fine. I took a tour of the inside on Thursday June 26, 2003 and what a beautiful job that has been done within the past year. It even comes with an elevator from the first to the second floor. All of Alstrom Vice Presidents offices will be located on the second floor very soon. There will be a Historical room and a Toy Soldiers room at the south end of the depot. A lot of preservation of keeping the original depot surroundings as much as possible. Mayor Hogan can be very proud of the final results of his restoration project on saving the Erie Railroad Depot. Hornell Can Be Proud Of This Historical Monument That Has Been Around Since 1837.
